At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
